“We have to enable people to be able to make 3D content before we can sell a lot of 3D TVs.” -Eric Fossum
Eric Fossum, inventor of the beloved CMOS sensor and man who knows on which side his bread is buttered, recently gave a talk at the Yale School of Engineering and Applied Science during which he described the state of the art in rangefinding image sensors. That state is essentially this: it is possible to capture a decent-resolution depth map of a scene on the same sensor which is capturing your images.
With the magic of computation, this becomes monoscopic 3D shot on a single sensor through a single lens. Or, I suppose, depth map metadata applicable to images captured by another camera entirely. Or perhaps an intelligent stereo camera rig…
The relevant section begins at 51:48, and the entire video is pretty nerdy and mostly for my hardcore DITs out there <local600 gangsigns>, but there’s also an interesting several minutes back near the beginning in which Fossum discusses his feelings about the ubiquity of his invention in a surveillance culture.
